Ridley plays Helena in the film and adopts an American accent, with Mendelsohn, who also previously played a villain in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, playing her violent father Jacob.
What The Marsh King’s Daughter Trailer Reveals About The Movie
After saying farewell to Rey (for now) in the divisive Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, The Marsh King’s Daughter is seemingly a fairly major pivot for Ridley in terms of character and tone. In addition to sporting an American accent, Ridley is playing a mother to a daughter in a story with some very dark subject matter. The trailer reveals that Helena’s mother was held captive by the notorious criminal known as the Marsh King for 12 years, giving birth to Helena during this time.
The fact that Ridley’s character also has a daughter could be used to speak to mature themes of generational trauma. While the main showdown is between Helena and Jacob, Helena’s daughter will seemingly be brought into the conflict as well when Jacob makes contact. The trailer suggests that much of the film will feature suspense and an atmosphere of dread as Helena confronts aspects of her past, but this suspense will eventually turn violent, with Helena breaking out a rifle to take the law into her own hands.
In addition to Ridley and Mendelsohn, The Marsh King’s Daughter features Garrett Hedlund as Helena’s husband, Stephen. Other cast members include Yellowstone‘s Gil Birmingham, Brooklynn Prince, Caren Pistorius, and Joey Carson. The Marsh King’s Daughter will hit theaters on October 6, with Helena and Jacob’s showdown likely to have a bloody ending.
